CHAPTER THIRTY FOUR
The week flew by with Ken getting his jobs done. Jobs?
One. Build a pirate ship.
Two. Catch up with gardening.
Three. Go to see to a dishwasher for a friend.
Four. Run the Wednesday disco.
Five. Get his cash - pack his stuff. …Whew!
The Wednesday came and Ken had taken his amp and speakers and boom-box to the pub at lunchtime in the car. He had been lucky that week, to get Mel, who normally worked at the pub but was laid off due to the relief management, to come down and do some cleaning for him. She was superb and did a great job - far better than he could do or had time to do this week! So Wednesday evening he walked around to the pub and put on his cassettes. He had organized them a little, into a bit of a play list. It seemed to go well and his mate Ade had brought a stack of tapes as well, so Ken included what he thought would be popular.
The night went excellently with not only the Five o’clock clubbers but quite a few other regulars were rocking on too. Up dancing again, Ken joining in and often instigating the dancing (two big left feet Ken!) Well, he didn’t know how, but the night was a wow. People stayed out longer than usual and a great party atmosphere was aided and abetted by Steve and Pauline, who had made and brought a few sandwiches and pastries, on their own initiative. This had built into a super night!
So much so that Jo, the relief manageress asked Ken if he would continue, on his return from holiday. Well he was doubly wound up now. Off on holiday back to Jan on Friday and a DJ on Wednesdays on his return! He didn’t believe how popular he had become all of a sudden!
Throughout the week he had worked through his “to do” list.
Completed and delivered the day before he went away, Ken worked on the pirate ship. This project had begun as a request from Pauline. The story began with the horrible weather they had had in the previous weeks. Pauline had been speaking on the phone to her granddaughter across in Stockport, who must have been asking about when she could come to visit. Pauline had said to her (heaven knows why) “All the rain we’ve had, the garden’s completely flooded. In fact we have had a pirate ship sailing on the lawn!”
Well the granddaughter picked up on this and obviously began to believe!
Pauline said to Ken afterwards “You can make all sorts of things can’t you? Can you conjure me up a pirate ship before my granddaughter comes? I’m really in trouble!” Ken asked what it was all about and she recounted the tale and said her granddaughter now believed that granny had a pirate ship!
Always up for the challenge, Ken asked the ages of the grandkids then said “What about a kiddies’ picnic bench that looks like a pirate ship?”
“Oh
